One Room Schoolhouses of Exeter, Rhode Island
Up until a relatively short time ago, the children of Exeter, RI attended school in one-room schoolhouses. Beginning with the construction of Exeter's first school in 1766, and continuing well into the 20th century, as many as 13 separate one-room schools were scattered throughout the town.
While many of the buildings are no longer standing, four of them were still in use as recently as 1952, when the modern Wawaloam School was built, and the era of one-room schoolhouses in Exeter came to an end.
The images contained here serve to preserve the memory of these buildings, along with the students and teachers who passed through their doors.
